I Hate MMU & CIMB

2 weeks ago, Dell’s HR Department sent us an email asking for our bank account no and some other details because after their discussion with MMU, it was concluded that we interns should receive our allowance on monthly basis rather than one lump sum at the end of our internship.

MMU forced Dell to make an agreement that for them to be able to take MMU students as their interns, Dell must bank in the intern’s allowance into MMU’s account first, and then MMU will bank it in into the intern’s account.

Since it’s obvious that MMU is using CIMB for all their banking purposes, all of us provided Dell’s HR with our CIMB account number. Dell’s HR told us that we should receive our allowance by 5th July. I use my CIMB account only for PTPTN purposes, and it has been a while since I made any banking transaction using my CIMB account as I’m no longer depending on PTPTN for my tuition fees aid.

Last week, I tried using my CIMB’s ATM card to check my account’s balance and it my transaction is automatically rejected. I can’t even login into my CIMB Clicks account.

I called CIMB’s helpline and was told that my account is in “Inactive” status because I didn’t make any transaction for over a year. To reactivate my account I must bring my passbook to any CIMB’s branch and make a withdrawal over the counter. I went to CIMB on campus’ branch and made a manual withdrawal last Thursday and I was told that my account will be reactivated and I can use the ATM card the next day.

Last Friday, we received a notification that for unavoidable circumstances, our allowance will be delayed to mid-next week (mid this week). Today, I tried to check my account balance via ATM machine and it was still rejected. I still can’t login into my CIMB Clicks account too. I called the helpline and was told it’s because I didn’t pay my RM 8 yearly ATM fees. I have more than enough cash in my CIMB account to pay the fees, so I asked her to deduct RM 8 from my account. She said that she doesn’t have the authority to do that and I have to go to CIMB branch (AGAIN???) and pay the ATM fees over the counter.

Since I’m working and don’t have my own transport it was kind of a hassle to go to the branch. I asked my work colleague to give me a ride the first time I went there, and it would be an inconvenience for her if I asked her for a favor again. I asked if I could send somebody else to go on my behalf and she say no, I have to go on my own. Come on la, it’s not like I’m sending someone to withdraw money on my behalf. I’m going to send someone to give them money!

In summary I hate MMU for:

- Causing delay in my allowance pay by making obnoxious rules.

- Using CIMB bank for all their transactions.

I hate CIMB for:

- Promising I can use the ATM card the next day, but obviously I still can’t.

- “Forcing” me to go to their branch twice.

1 Month At Dell

It has been a month since I started to work at Dell. So how do I feel after a month working at Dell?

It’s tiring; I woke up at 6am every day, went out at 7am, took a bus to Cyberjaya at 7:35am, work till 5pm, took a bus back to Klang at 5:20pm, reached Klang Parade (the shuttle bus’ final stop) at around 6:30pm, took another bus from Klang Parade to home, and finally reached home at around 7:15pm.

How about work? I’m not really sure how to describe what my task is really about. In my evaluation form, my manager filled in my “Position” as “Application Analyst”. Every week I will be given 3 days (Monday – Wednesday) to do Trouble Ticket Auditing and when I’m done with that I will be given some projects by my manager for me to work on.

Speaking of my manager (Kong Ee Pheng), I only get to see her for the first 3 days as she’s based in Penang and we only communicate through emails and phone calls. She said she’s kinda busy and can only visit us on September.

Officially, in Dell’s directory, Ee Pheng is not my manager. Officially, Finian Lee is my manager, but oddly he’s not responsible to supervise or give me any task. In Dell’s Directory, Finian Lee is my manager, but in reality I work under Kong Ee Pheng. Oh, both Finian and Ee Pheng are the one who interviewed me.

From Left to Right: Kok Wai, Si Gorjes, Zailan, Sarah, Finian, Joanne, Harvinder, Amilia, Me, KB, Don’t Remember His Name 1, Don’t Remember His Name 2, Tony Lin (my buddy), and Xavier

Sometimes I finished my tasks earlier than my deadline and when I have nothing to do I spent my time surfing the net or “kacau-ing” my work colleagues. There are 3 interns from MMU. Me, Nur Hanis (Si Gorjes), and Khairul Barriyah (KB). Me and Hanis are from MMU Cyberjaya while KB is from Malacca campus.

Aside from work, we have monthly Team Building sessions to relieve stress from work and fortify the team spirit between the team members. Last week I attended the June’s Team Building session. We had a lunch together at Q-Thai, Cyberjaya.

At first me, Hanis, and KB don’t want to go because we don’t really know anybody else who’s attending the lunch and thinking that we interns will stick out like a sore thumb. That, and the fact that we have to pay RM 30+ for the lunch. We can eat 10 lunches at Dell’s Cafeteria with that amount of money.

In the end, we went after our buddy (kinda like mentor interns) forced us to go, and we glad that we went. We get to know new people and it didn’t feel as awkward as we thought it would be. The people I work with are very friendly, and Dell is definitely where I want to work. XD

Exam Result Is Out!

Pass / Fail exam result is out and Alhamdulillah, I passed all subjects taken last trimester. There are no grade yet, but from my manual calculation, I still managed to maintain my GPA, and my CGPA has actually increased a bit. XD

Update (10th June 08):

Result with grade has been released. It’s pretty much what I expected except for one subject.

I got an “A” for my Final Year Project! Whoa, I certainly did not expect that. I’m expecting to get a “B” at most because my partner quits on me and that causes the end result to not be what I have planned. Alhamdulillah, I was given an “A”. It felt like my efforts and the suffering through those sleepless nights finally paid off.

First Day At Dell

- I did not get to continue stay at hostel, so I’m now staying at home. I’m taking a shuttle bus from Klang Parade to Dell. The trip lasts around 40 – 60 minutes depending on the traffic condition.

- There are 17 interns from MMU, 14 from Cyberjaya and 3 from Malacca.

- I with 2 other interns got thrown into “Global Application Management Service” team. Basically, we’re supposed to assist any problem related to applications used in Dell, worldwide. No, it’s not customer support.

- My working hour is 8am – 5pm, Monday – Friday. Luckily, my team was not assigned any rotational shift, so that means I don’t have to work on night shifts and public holidays. Also, if a public holiday falls on Saturday, the following Monday will be a day off for us (except for those who are working rotational shifts.).

- I was given my own cubicle to work in. It was a nice surprise to see they have prepared almost everything for me, including a name plate. I say almost because we have to setup the computer on our own. Luckily the OS and the required software are already pre-installed on the computer.

- I was given a brand new desktop computer. The spec is pretty nice, 3.0 GHz Intel dual core CPU, with 2 GB RAM, which is better than computers in MMU’s lab. Since I’m in a support team, I was also given a phone with my own direct line. I was told that we’re the only interns that are given our own phones.

- Some teams are provided a notebook instead of a desktop. As far as I know, only those who are working rotational shifts were given a notebook.

- The food in the cafeteria is acceptable and most important thing is they’re cheap. 1 plate of rice with chickens and vegetable and a glass of orange juice costs only RM 3.10. It’s cheap right?

- As for the allowance, one of my intern colleague told me that the allowance will only be given after the internship has ended in a lump sum. What’s worse is that the allowance will be sent to MMU’s Finance first and we will only get that money after Finance processed everything, which according to my past experience with them, will take a long time.
